The Academy of Emergency Medical Science at Pine Forest High School was established to provide competent, caring, and compassionate healthcare employees for the State of North Carolina. The curriculum in this course of study introduces students to varied careers in health care, assists students in identifying their interests and aptitudes, and provides them with the knowledge and skills necessary for post-secondary education, leading to jobs in these careers. Through partnerships with local hospitals, healthcare providers, colleges and universities, and health care facilities in the Fayetteville area, the Academy of Emergency Medical Science will enable students to investigate the careers available to them in the allied health and health care industries.
Overview
The Pine Forest High School Academy of Emergency Medical Science (AOEMS) is a four-year program for high school students. Students can apply as a freshman, sophomore, or junior provided they meet admission requirements and they have enough room in their schedule to meet their high school graduation requirements. The program educates and trains students in multiple areas in the medical field. AOEMS is designed to integrate the learning of communication, technical and academic skills through real-world applications in pre-hospital, emergency settings or long-term care patient settings. The program ensures that participating students are in a course of study that uses a curriculum designed and approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Nurse Aide Certification curricula. The focus of the Nurse Aide curriculum is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant as well as success in a post-secondary school and/or in the workforce. Students receive instruction from registered nurses with teaching credentials. Instruction includes enlightening lectures, skills practicum, job shadowing, industry mentorships, and community internships with licensed, practicing physicians, registered nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and certified nursing assistants.
